4 out of 5 stars Good Times Online   November 5, 2008

FPS and combat games have gotten out of hand as a genre. For the most part you are either shooting Nazis or Aliens. If this is the main difference, save games like Bioshock, we are really in trouble. In a marketplace this crowded the developers are really having to get down and slice the nitty gritty details. If Gears of War is a scalpel for combat, then Call of Duty 4 is definitely the needle.

As far as genre titles go, Call of Duty 4 is clearly the best of the norm for FPS today. It's also easily the best in the series not least because, thank heavens, we finally made it out of WW2.

The best parts of COD4 hit you early on. The cinemtic entries to the battlefield are great. The weapon models are slick and so are the character animations. The lighting is pretty good, though not the best out there right now. Combat is intense and mostly enjoyable with the relatively limited weapons you get. Multiplayer is really where its at here. The perks and experience points will keep you going back for more. Without this well thought out multiplayer mode, this game would probably be in the $5 bin by now, which leads me to the criticisms...

Call of Duty 4 starts out looking good. But soon the cracks begin to show. Graphic glitches pop up with people walking through doors and walls and sure the visuals are pretty good in some spots, but not really top grade anymore, there are lots and lots of blurry textures, mostly on the ground. The squad AI is good in some ways in that your guys actually hit bad guys when they shoot. But the AI, in general, is awful. Enemies can see you waaaay off from where they should be able to. And your squad mates just tend to stand up in the line of fire all the time. They seemingly are able to take hundreds upon hundreds of bullet hits and never die. Pretty weak if you ask me. In Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, your squad mates can ,and frequently do, get shot and go down and you have to work with that. also in GRAW, though it is a MUCH slower paced play, it offers more options to play with and achieve your objective. It just has much deeper gameplay too, but granted a loss of the intensity too.

The main problem with COD4, is there isn't really much to do in a FPS of this kind. You simply run from check point to check point, many times dying over and over again until you figure out how to exploit the enemy spawn areas. There really isn't much combat strategy here. You just run and shoot and hopefully there aren't any dogs around the corner. If there are, lather, rinse and repeat until success.

Aside from a few beginning levels and the cool AC-130 stage, the game goes downhill quickly. The Multiplayer is really the best reason to buy this game. And a good reason it is. Online, this game is a blast and brings back that old rush of combat feeling I got way back when Counterstrike hit. Its fun stuff.

Call of Duty 4 is a game where Infinity Ward seemingly came up with about 4 great levels and then couldn't figure out what to fill in between. The ancient scripted, rails run and gun gameplay completely lacks depth. I just wish we could get more play elements into shooters like this.

But for good times online, Call of Duty 4 gets the job done more than any other. The single player is weak but has entertaining pieces and if you're looking for a flat-out run and gun FPS that gets down to the nitty gritty of what this genre is about, then Call of Duty 4 is your game.

5 out of 5 stars Next-gen gaming the way it ought to be   October 27, 2008

Cinema-gorgeous graphics combines with immersive and addictive gameplay to make this an absolutely incredible gaming experience. At one point, I could feel my heart pounding as I lay in the Ukrainian grass, hoping my pursuers would walk past me without noticing.

The guys at Activision made good use of the PS3's powerful hardware. There is no lag, even when there's lots of smoke and action on the field.

To the extent that there is still a wall between movies and interactive entertainment, CoD IV is a big wrecking ball: I have seen the future of gaming, and it is **hot**!

5 out of 5 stars This is the reason I bought a PS3   October 5, 2008

This is the best game I have ever played, and I'm not usually a fan of FPS. I was on the fence about getting a PS3 given it's price, but once I played this on my friend's PS3 (stayed up all night playing it), I knew I had to have it.

The other game that I HAD to own was GT Prologue (when the heck is the full version coming out anyway??)

I haven't even tried playing this game online yet because the 1-player mode is so incredible - the storyline, the graphics, the gameplay...everything is incredible. I've tried other FPS after playing this (Rainbow Six Vegas is not very good...or maybe it's just by comparison), but FPS or not, this is still the best game yet.
