BE AWARE OF THE PACKAGING! November 14, 2008 M. Western 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
These compatability issues, though iritating, are a format liability issue that will hopefully end soon. I am not sure why continuing to update would be necessary indefinitely. What I really don't like about this set is that the packaging itself presents problems if you someday hope to have a nice, clean, uniform Bond set someday. There are no hardcases for individual disks like the old DVD Bond collections. The outer case is kinda cool with slipcase, sorta fake leather texture and a nice multi-layer look into a pipe with a bond figure. However, once you open up the booklets, the holder for the discs is very cheap with just a foam knob pasted to the cardboard itself which will undoubtedly fall off over time. What one also must understand is that there are at least one or two bond films not licenced through the same studio so you are guaranteed that you will not be able to collect all the films in a similar set. The packaging will be simple blu cases on those most likely. Depending on your preferences, you should just go with the single cases to start with. For a short time after the release, you are going to get those free movie tickets(QOS)on each box anyway as long as you buy from a reputable dealer.
Nothing but problems November 11, 2008 J. Beard (Nashville, TN) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Like other reviewers I too bought this item expecting to relive some great Bond moments in high-def. The unfortunate fact is they are poorly packaged - in a small leather book style binder that doesn't secure the discs very well. I also had poor compatibility issue with my Dell Studio Hybrid. Only 1 of the 3 discs played. I went to Fox's support website, emailed their customer support and got a lackluster response: Send us back all your discs and receipt (at your cost) and we'll send them back (hopefully fixed). If you're going to bound this item I would advise buying it locally so you'll know immediately if you need to return it. I did, and fortunately I'm not going to have to deal with Fox. I'll either buy them individually or wait until they've worked out the issues with these discs.
Poor packaging November 6, 2008 ROKman (Aiea, Hi United States) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This review is not based on the movie itself or the quality of the Blu Ray disk. Rather it is a warning to those considering buying this multipack of the absolutely horrible packaging of this expensive set. My three pack arrived today and I just open the box and was horrified at the package. I have purchased many multi packs of movies/TV shows and every other time the disks were held on a separate page in a plastic reinforced page with a plastic spindle in the middle. This set came in a "book style "package with a foam rubber type spindle to hold the disk in place. Well on disk two "From Russia With love" the foam spindle was missing!! The disk had bounced around so much it was scratched and looked like an old scratched disk !!!! Regarding disks one and three the foam spindles were half torn off and surely after one play the foam spindle will certainly fall off. Disgraceful - A pox on MGM.
Beware: a LOT of players won't load these discs October 26, 2008 J. Stinson (Music City, USA) 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
Full disclosure: My 1-star review is for poor compatibility of these discs -- not the actual video content. The movies themselves are among my favorites of all time, but I haven't seen a single frame on any of these blu-ray discs! I bought all 6 of these movies individually, and none of them will get past a black screen when viewed on my HP laptop (QuickPlay v3.7 blu-ray player.) I've verified that the firmware and software version are the very latest so... until someone at HP gets motivated, you might be waiting awhile to play these through your laptop. For the record, I have over 100 blu-rays and these are the first for which I've had a problem that could not be cured by updating the software. I'm sure this problem will go away in time, but it could be a few months. As others have mentioned, all 6 of these discs have garnered irate feedback on forums all over the net for compatibility problems with an astounding variety of standalone players (Sony, Panasonic, LG, Samsungs, etc.) On the positive side, those with PS3s seem to be in good shape. Apparently, if your player can actually play the discs, you will be rewarded with an outstanding blu-ray Bond experience. It is very disheartening, however, when you can't! My positive experience with so many other discs gives me optimistic confidence that the problem with these 6 discs will soon be a fading bad memory, but until then -- buyer beware.
3 great Bond flicks....remastered and restored on Blu-Ray. Looks fantastic! October 25, 2008 D. Stone (Sacramento, CA) I bought both sets the day they were released. After watching them over the last week, I have to say that MGM is 6 for 6. A superb job on the remaster for their Blu-Ray debut. I happen to love these 3 titles, and have had them many times over the past 6 years on standard dvd. These are a great improvement over the special edition stanard dvd's which have been released over the last 6-8 years. I will say that the older Bond films do show their age. You simply cant compare all the films in one shot. Thunderball looks very, very nice. It has been cleaned up and is very sharp and detailed with no scratches or blemishes. It is super clean and the best it has ever looked. The blacks a very good, the skintones are accurate. The best thing about this film is the clean look and sound. It may not be perfect.....but is certainly the best it can be. Simply put.....close to perfect for it's age. From Russia With Love is super nice. Better all the way around, but not by much. It is hard to find faults with these films with the restoration job done by MGM. Super sharp, great color, and detail that has never been seen until now. Skintones are spot on, blacks are very nice and deep. As nice as it can get. Thet really do pop on the screen. For Your Eyes Only is one of my all time favorites. This is slam dunk on picture and sound. Though it is on the newer side when compared to Connery era Bond's. It is still a few decades old. It looks fresh and sharp as it was when released at the theater. I would be hard pressed to ask for anything more. Super clean and sharp picture. Colors are spot on, no scratches or blemishes, everything is in focus with no softness to speak of. An A+ for this classic 007 movie with Roger Moore. The sound has been remastered also. Though the older titles dont have much for the surround speakers. The voices are clean and crisp. No distractions of any kind. A very good effort for sure. But it wont be a title to show off your sound system if your an audiofile. Tons of extras, cool menus. Enough to keep any Bond fan busy for a long time. A great set worth buying if you love this franchise. As far as the playback goes....I have had zero problems with any of them on my PS3. As far as the packaging goes, it is what it is. Nothing special....gets the job done. A nice set!
