Amazon.com Spectacular animated action scenes turn the ancient epic poem Beowulf into a modern fantasy movie, while motion-capture technology transforms plump actor Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) into a burly Nordic warrior. When a Danish kingdom is threatened by the monster Grendel (voiced and physicalized by Crispin Glover, River's Edge), Beowulf--lured by the promise of heroic glory--comes to rescue them. He succeeds, but falls prey to the seductive power of Grendel's mother, played by Angelina Jolie... and as Jolie's pneumatically animated form rises from an underground lagoon with demon-claw high heels, it becomes clear that we're leaving the original epic far, far behind. Regrettably, the motion-capture process has made only modest improvements since The Polar Express; while the characters' eyes no longer look so flat and zombie-like, their faces remain inexpressive and movements are still wooden. As a result, the most effective sequences feature wildly animated battles and the most vivid character is Grendel, whose grotesqueness ends up making him far more sympathetic than any of the mannequin-like human beings. The meant-to-be-titillating images of a naked Jolie resemble an inflatable doll more than a living, breathing woman (or succubus, as the case may be). But the fights--particularly Grendel's initial assault on the celebration hut--pop with lushly animated gore and violence. Also featuring the CGI-muffled talents of Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs), Robin Wright Penn (The Princess Bride), and John Malkovich (Dangerous Liaisons). --Bret Fetzer

Cool dvd November 17, 2008 Rampant Reader (Philadelphia, USA) Ok - I will admit that Angelina Jolie was a big draw, but I would have seen this movie any ways. The graphics/cgi in this movie are great. real cool. I think these are the most realistic CGI people I've ever seen. I vaguely remembered reading the original Beowulf way back when. From the extras they say this is a little different take on the original. This is a real good story, there is a lot of skill that went into bringing the characters and story to life. The battle/fight scenes are excellent, and it's got good drama and an interesting story that kept my attention all the way through. I really enjoyed this. Totally entertaining.
Beowulf Dvd Review November 12, 2008 George Felder III (Annville, PA) Special effects are decent, any resemblance to the actual story is purely coincidental! Too bad, as most students SHOULD read originals before watching "re-makes."
what they can do with computers.. October 30, 2008 David A. Smith (Webberville, Mi, USA) If you look at this movie closley you'll see that it is animated. when i saw the previews i didn't know it was animated. they did a pretty good job making the actors look real. this was a very good movie. good action and animation.
Great action with a mid-evil theme! October 26, 2008 Myles Dalquist (Spokane,WA USA) This movie ranks with the movie 300! Great CGI, with a feel of 3-D at times. A must for your movie files. A second or third watch brings out all of the "little things" you'll miss at first.

This movie has to be my all time favorite movie. I love animation. Until i saw this movie I thought the japanese were the leaders of animation. boy was I wrong. I also thought from commercials I had seen that this was live action. I mean, thats how good the cgi was. The story is phenomenal and according to myth possibly true to some extent. The way he always screams his own name as he is kicking some a** is awesome too. watch it on hd dvd though. extra scenes and such. My only complaint, Not in 3D like I saw at the movies. Now THAT would be great!
