The next chapter finds Rambo recruited by missionaries to protect them during a humanitarian aid effort on behalf of the persecuted Karen people of Burma. If you've been wondering what ever happened to ex-Green Beret superwarrior John Rambo since he singlehandedly shot up a Pacific Northwest town (First Blood, 1982), returned to the jungles of 'Nam to free U.S. POWs held long after war's end (Rambo: First Blood Part II, 1985), and interrupted the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan long enough to blow lots of stuff up and rescue his old commandant from the Reds (Rambo III, 1988), then Rambo (2008) is for you. Without so much as a IV to dilute the brand name, Rambo--which is what most of us called the second, most iconic film in the series--may aspire to open a new era for a pop legend. But it's a thoroughly mechanical attempt to reanimate a franchise that, absent the anger, frustration, and self-loathing of the post-Vietnam years, has no meaning or purpose. For some time now Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) has been putt-putting along the Thai-Burmese border in a longboat, catching exotic snakes to sell. As for the 60-year civil war in Burma between the brutal government and the Karen independence movement, he ignores it. Enter a party of American missionaries whose dewy blond spokeswoman (Dexter's Julie Benz) asks Rambo to haul them upriver so that they can bring medical aid to the insurgents. After the requisite number of monosyllabic refusals, he does. Soon afterward the do-gooders are in a world of hurt, and he's summoned to lead a squad of mercenaries on a rescue mission.

As storytelling, the latest Rambo is the most bare-bones of the bunch. Rambo has little to say, so it's especially galling that Stallone, as director and co-writer, obliges him to have essentially the same conversation at three different points (the final distillation: "Live for nothing or die for something"). The Burmese army goons seem in competition to commit the most hideous atrocity (e.g., child skull-crushing underfoot), the better to justify the eventual, lovingly protracted spectacle of them being eviscerated by high-powered weaponry. Although shot in Thailand, the movie has mostly been photographed in brown, reducing any particular sense of place but, perhaps, perversely increasing our gratitude for the splashes of purple whenever hot metal tatters flesh. --Richard T. 5 out of 5 stars RAMBO   July 19, 2008
Samantha Monroe (Fountain, Fl)
THE BEST RAMBO MOVIE IN THE SERIES IN MY OPINION LOTS OF ACTION AND VERY GRAPHIC IN DWTAIL OF HOW THINGS WERE IN BURMA

5 out of 5 stars This movie was excellent!!!   July 18, 2008

This movie was impressive and exciting. Also the Rambo series were great.
This movie was action packed and it's heart beating. Also Rambo always eliminated bad guys so he was great. This movie was made good as others.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful update to the series   July 18, 2008
Geoff Fortytwo (San Francisco, CA USA)
I have always loved the Rambo series, but in recent years I've watched them and really felt that the movies were getting dated.

Rambo #4 is exactly what I was wishing for. It's much grittier than the previous movies. None of the dialog felt forced and there wasn't any of the annoying hokey humor that I disliked in some of the movies.

The only thing I would have changed was the too long b&w flashback in the middle of the movie. I felt they could have shorted that considerably or possibly even removed it entirely.

All action movies have tons of violence, but it's often not very gritty. It's often just a bullet to the bad guy and they go down. There is some serious bloody violence in this movie and I absolutely love it.

I really liked the way that Stallone played Rambo in this one. Strangely, I think he actually looks better in this movie than in the previous ones. In previous movies he was just a big musclebound hero. In this one he looks like a huge chiseled stone giant.

Some people think that action heroes should throw in the towel when they get older. This movie proves Stallone has a lot of action hero days left in him. I eagerly await Rambo V.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully gratuitous action   July 17, 2008
B. Moreland (Minneapolis, MN)
An excellent return to the series, Rambo is a feast of satisfyingly over-the-top mayhem. Fans of the the original trilogy should have a blast with this one. Those that were not fans can probably pass. Rambo and Rocky Balboa have been two solid films marking the return of Stallone. Here's hoping he will stick around for a while longer.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome!   July 13, 2008
D. MAYFIELD
This film was so much better than I expected it to be. It was loaded with violence, but was graphic to get a point across and to show the atrocities that occur against people who were unfortunate enough to be born in unstable third world countries that are dominated by rebels and ruthless warlords. The first hour of the movie is particularly painful to watch, with some of the innocent villagers being subjected to unimaginable torture and brutality. That only serves to make it that much more gratifying to watch Rambo exact ferocious, deadly justice on them. Bring it he does, and fans of both the 1980's Rambo films and today's action movies featuring extreme violence (Sin City, Running Scared) will have to smile when the final action scene concludes. It may be unrealistic, but will leave you in awe. You will get up after the movie and want to go kick someone's butt; the adrenaline pumping final showdown is that intense. Do not let the kids watch!
