Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Take a look at Onkyo's first home theater system capable of passing 1080p video and studio-master-quality audio, such as DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD. With HDMI version 1.3a as your link, the HT-SP908 becomes a home theater dynamo with some real versatility. The 7.1-channel A/V receiver and HD conversion DVD/CD/MP3 player combine to expertly handle DVD, broadcasts, CDs, digital music and video files from your computer, and satellite radio. You can also bring your iPod to the party with the included RI Dock, which neatly integrates the device into your home entertainment system. With many of the features found in Onkyo's high-def A/V receiver line-up - Audyssey 2EQ, Faroudja DCDi, RIHD, HDMI and component video upconversion - the HT-SP908 looks every bit the total solution.

4 out of 5 stars Very Pleased   August 5, 2008
William K. Chicoine
Well this is my second surround system. First was a cheap Realistic to learn from. I went to the brick and mortar stores to listen to a bunch, then I settled on this Onkyo. Every thing was pretty simple, some people had trouble with the speaker mounting, I did not. I seen one review where a guy said that you have crank the power up to far to hear the speakers, well don't know what they are talking about. The only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 is that when you spend this kind of money I just think they could give you 5 dollars more worth of wire. I bought a spool of 14 gauge wire and I'm happy I did. his system is great for the non techy home owner, I love it.

5 out of 5 stars All you need to start your own HD setup   August 1, 2008
Bo Schoenwald (South Dakota)
You get what they tell you it is, a system that is capable of HD quality sound. What more could you ask for at this price. The speakers it comes with do well enough for a small to mid size room any bigger and you may need to upgrade several of the speakers to achieve quality sound. Other than that, its a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZON AMAZED   July 29, 2008
M. Lisenby (War Eagle Country, Alabama)
First, I am very satisfied with the whole process of shopping through Amazon.com. Great reviews provided for the products. I purchased this product after a great deal of research on multiple sites, including Consumer Reports. I had never heard of Onkyo before, but I liked their extensive HTIB packages. I settled on this one because of the many features, including the speaker optimization. It was great to watch the price change almost daily on amazon and I ended up paying about $50 less than when I originally decided to buy and overall saved $200 off retail (not to mention no tax or shipping). Now to the product. Everything arrived intact via CEVA delivery and within timeframe promised. Setup was easy with exception of hooking on the speaker wires without banana plugs as due to the number of speakers, it was very cramped to insert the wire into the connectors on the receiver. In my final setup, I attached banana plugs to the wiring. Comprehensive remote provided with the receiver. I purchased a Rocketfish Wireless Speaker Kit for my rear surround speakers, works fine although intermittently interferes with my wireless internet. I love Onkyo's multple surround sounds options. The receiver is large and heavy but has a plethora of connectors including 2 HDMI inputs. Inside my TV stand cabinet with glass doors the heat builds up quite a bit. I may have to take the door off. Included DVD player with upscale to 1080i works nicely. Very pleased with sound. Not very good FM/AM radion pickup in my area with just the included antennas. I have not added a XM or Sirrus antenna yet. Anyway, I am tickled pink for the two weeks I have had it so far.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome home theater system   July 9, 2008
William Bray (Pacifica, CA USA)
I'm a born skeptic, but this home theater in a box is every bit as good as CNET and PC mag say it is. It is easy to set up, has crisp clear sound and, wonder of wonders, the remote is actually universal, controlling the receiver, my dvd, cd, and tv effortlessly. You can run it as a 5.1, a 6.1 or a 7.1 system! As an added bonus, the gloss black speakers and subwoofer look great. If you are in the market for an HTIB, look no further. You are not likely to find a better bargain on the market.

4 out of 5 stars Good investment for serious first HTIB   June 30, 2008

Pros:
- Solid Onkyo product with good sound. Sub-woofer is especially good.
- Receiver is very full featured. It comes with a calibration mic so the system adjusts itself to the layout/arrangement of your viewing area.
- The receiver supports newer HD surround formats that BluRay discs will support.
- Good upscaling dvd player, upscales regular DVD's to 1080p. Also plays mp3 CD's fine.
- The Ipod dock allows you to control the Ipod from your receiver's remote. The Ipod dock also supports video out from the Ipod.
- One major point for me was the discrete components i.e. distinct receiver, dvd player etc. You can get cheaper Sony, Panasonic units for around $500 where many pieces are integrated into one box. If one piece breaks (DVD players often go first), you pretty much have to toss the whole thing. I've heard those units also have proprietary connecting wires to the speakers. With components, individual parts can be used longer especially great receivers like this one. Yes, this Onkyo is more expensive, but I think of it as a longer term investment. I can buy a ps3 tomorrow and take full advantage of it; I can't do that with sub-$500 units.

Cons:
- One minor surprise for me. The receiver supports up-converting/upscaling component-input to HDMI-output. BUT, in that case, the HDMI output is capped at 720p. So 1080i HD cable from my cable-box actually gets downscaled to 720p. Onlyo must have assumed older dvd players or regular cable would be connected via component input (480i -> 720p). HDMI input -> HDMI output is pass-thru and component input-> component output is pass thru. So in those cases 1080i/p input would come untouched as 1080i/p output
- MP3 CD navigation is ok. But I really wish Onkyo had added a screen-saver or screen-dimmer in the navigation view. Since the directory view is static, I'm worried about leaving that on and having burn-in on my LCD HDTV. Fancy visualization like the PS3 has would be perfect :-)
- This Onkyo system is not trivial to setup. So be ready to connect lots of cables and to spend time and effort. Also requires spending time going through the manual. But if you're a geek like me, you'll enjoy it and the final results are worth it.
